Notes from Tonight’s Meeting

Party people if you were not one of the 15 that were present this evening, then you were not in the place to be.  Amazing meeting.  Great discussion and most importantly progress.
Here are the main points, I’ll break each out seperately as well… 1.  We reached a decision on the date for the Spring cleanup…this will be held on Saturday, April 19th.  We will be kicking things off early in the morning, gloves will be provided, if you got tools bring em so we can get to cleaning.  The goal this year is to clean not only the spaces in one’s own area but, the streets in and around as well.   2.  We reached a decision on the date for Door Decorating Contest…this will be held on Saturday, April 26th.  We don’t have all the rules yet, but will shortly and, there are going to be PRIZES for the winners so get your ideas ready!!! 3.  We have a movie star on our block….”Pippin and Zastrou” debuts on March 15, more details to come, we should be able to get some free passes too…expect an interview with the man who’s life the story has roots.  4.  We had updates on the Capital City Cultural District…we are awaiting the new developments between City Council and the State to determine the specifics to the proposed district before getting too crazy but, we are in favor conceptually.
5.  House Bill 1054, we spoke about the coming legislation attempt on March 4th at 1pm and Melinda, our neighbor on Northwest Street has said that anyone who wants to speak or give their testimony to the bill needs to have their name, address, and phone number ready and she will set things up.   5.  We got a visit from Chuck Walsh, who spoke on the Dedication of Lassie Belt’s work…EVERYBODY NEEDS TO BE THERE ON FRIDAY!!!  It all goes down at 3pm at the Stanton Center!!! 6.  Welcome to the new FACES!!

Peace from Clay Street, home now to movie stars!!!

House Bill 1054

Pay attention party people.

For the last few years there has been a push to create a Drug Free Zone around community centers, similar to what is currently surrounding schools.  The bill, House Bill 1054,  has been introduced again this year by Delegate Ron George and is supported by every other Delegate in the county, except for one at last count.

Here’s a link to the bill  http://mlis.state.md.us/2008RS/billfile/HB1054.htm

The basis of the bill is to extend stiffer punishment for those caught selling or possessing illegal drugs or paraphanelia within 1000 feet of the community center.   With an amazing level of enterpreneurial activity that gravitates around the Stanton Center you can see where this would make a great deal of sense to get through.

The process is such: the bill is introduced by the Delegate and this will be done on March 4th, then it is reviewed by a judiciary committee from their it can be argued on the house floor.

Now, the last few years House Bill 1054 has not gotten past the judiciary committee.  This committee is chaired by Joe Valerio a long standing member of the delegates, also a former defense attorney.   The arguement against has been that judges are not using the extent of the law as it stands.   With that in mind the intelligence continues with, what good is it to add more penalties if those that are current are not being used?

Taking a quick step back party people, we need to focus on these judges, there are a lot of stones thrown at the police and the mayor’s office, but the more we are learning, the more it is coming to light that the sentences that are being handed down are not strong enough and that the judges should be feeling more pressure from our general populus.  Keep a few stones in your pocket and get that pitching arm warmed up.  Someone call Roger Clemens for his diet.

Who will volunteer to get us a list of the judges in town and their contact info?

Back to the original program, House Bill 1054.  With the pushback that has been received around the bill in the past we need to increase the attention that is given to it.  Call WRNR, the Capital, email Paul at Capital Punishment, call your alderman, knock on your neighbors door, and get behind this…

Here’s Ron George’s number:  410-841-3439  and his email is ron.george@house.state.md.us

Call Ron, email Ron, ask what you can do to help.  Offer to show up on March 4th at 1pm, take off work, sit in, show support.   Be a part of something positive.
