The Talking Heads…shots fired

I was about to sit down and begin another posting when all of the sudden what do I hear?  Shots fired.  Coming from either from up on Pleasant or over on Monument.  Something has gone wrong again, more than likely some insignificant event has become significant because someone had a gun.

Cue the talking heads.  The so called activists, the so called leaders, the self appointed, self righteous people who “care”.   Come on out again and give a speech about how somethings got to be done, how we got to figure this out, how drugs are a problem, how guns are a problem, how we need to come together…then go back to your house and don’t come back out.  You are not leaders.

This brings me to what was going to be my original point, talking heads.   We got a lot of talking heads back here.  People who are willing to say all they want but, when it comes time to get their hands dirty, its just pass the baton.  No one wants to take responsibility for any of the drama.  We’ve got the housing authority, we’ve got the police, we’ve got the community association, we got the community itself, and no one wants to own the problem.  No one wants to say “I’ll handle it” and put the press on their own shoulders.

Maybe I am too combative, maybe I am too much of a loose cannon, maybe I am too young to understand, maybe I should fall in line and learn that there must be some super secret way to get things done that is written in some city code somewhere.

Frustrated I am.   Beaten I am not.

Irony

I am very bothered by what has occured in my neighborhood.   I have been living here now for the last year and I am fully aware that there are problems but, this recent circumstance has me very bothered.  I crack jokes about the neighborhood fiends, I question the morality of the entreprenuers, I speak of great change to come, I attend meetings intended to chip away at the beaten down mentality, and I do it all with great hope.

I am angry that this has occurred.  I am angry at the failure of our local community and that community is Annapolis as a whole.  We are a very wealthy area, a VERY wealthy area.  We are visited by VERY wealthy people.  One of the most expensive pursuits of the wealthy, boating, is pastime of most that reside here.  Yet, there is a 17 year old that is going to serve the rest of his life in prison and there is an 18 year old that will never get another chance to make a positive impact.

How does this happen?  How does it happen that the Govenor of Maryland lives less then 1 mile away from where the murder went down.  How does it happen that a 300 million dollar structure complete with restaurants who’s menus offer a tasty rent sized bill for a dinner for 4 are in operation just a block or two away?  How does it happen that a town that boasts a yacht club, a ferrari club, home prices averaging more than half a million dollars for the SMALL ones, and a downtown that can charge 30 to 60 dollars a square foot for its commercial property, and still there are places that kids are killing kids?

Homicide

Reality.  The 8th homicide of the year in Annapolis occured on Halloween night in the College Creek Terrace section of Clay Street.  It is a very disturbing and unfortunate event.  The young man who died was only 18 years old and equally distressing is the young man who has been charged with having pulled the trigger was only 17 years old.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families in this time of strife.

Peace goes out.
